The Guilin Hills of China

Posted Image

The Guilin Hills are rock formations made of limestone and they are situated along the Li River in China. The tree-covered limestone hills are one of China’s most storied natural wonders, known as Guilin after the local town. They appear in countless Chinese scroll paintings, poems and even on the back of the 20-yuan note. Around 9 million local tourists visit every year.

THE TEMPLES OF BAGAN, MYANMAR

Posted Image

Known for its thousands of temples in a 26-square-mile (67 sq km) space within a dusty, flat plain, the best times to experience the serenity and scope of Bagan are at dawn and dusk.
After the earthquake in 1975, there are only 2,217 pagodas left in Bagan, in contrast to more than 5,000 during height of the political centre. Thus in order to preserve the original pagodas, only horse-driven carriage are allowed to travel among the pagodas.
Although an application was submitted, UNESCO does not designate Bagan as a World Heritage Site. The main reason given is that the military junta (SPDC) has haphazardly restored ancient stupas, temples and buildings, ignoring original architectural styles and using modern materials which bear little or no resemblance to the original designs. The junta has also established a golf course, a paved highway, and built a 200-foot (61 meter) watchtower in the southeastern suburb of Minnanthu.

Krakatoa Eruption from Afar

Posted Image

A volcano on Krakatoa is still erupting. Perhaps most famous for the powerfully explosive eruption in 1883 that killed tens of thousands of people, ash from a violent eruption might also have temporarily altered Earth’s climate as long as 1500 years ago. In 1927, eruptions caused smaller Anak Krakatau to rise from the sea, and the emerging volcanic island continues to grow at an average rate of 2 cm per day. The latest eruption of Anak Krakatau started in 2008 April and continues today. In this picture, Anak Krakatau is seen erupting from Rakata, the main island of the Krakatoai group. High above, stars including the Big Dipper are clearly apparent.

The Craziest Illusion in Paris

Posted Image

Posted Image

An anamorphosis is a distorted picture that finds its original aspect ratio and makes sense when viewed from one angle. The artist François Abelanet has mastered this modern variation of trompe l’oeil, which he shows through a new masterpiece of land art which will be on display until July 15th on the steps of City Hall in the center of an ephemeral garden dedicated to urban trees.
With its geometric lines in 3D, the work gives visitors the illusion of a relief and covers 1500 square meters. It measures 100 meters long and requires 1200 square meters of lawn, 300 m² of sedum and 650 m3 of straw and sand. About 90 gardeners and technicians were mobilized continuously for five days for the completion of this ephemeral work of art.
This huge contemporary garden questions the link between nature and city, and their difficult coexistence. At the intersection of architecture, decoration and land art, the work “Who to believe?” shows the marriage between town and nature and between mineral and vegetable. A fleeting image that evokes the urban and the regular planting of trees along the streets.
With “Who to believe?” François Albaret invites the viewer to feel and experience the fundamental place of nature: “We live in a world where one intends to discuss the ecologists, scientists, industry … I wanted to just focus on the problem of the tree and to invite people to consider the place, the tree, nature and the environment for them. I wish for people to ask the question to themselves and feel how the environment is fundamental. ”

Lions Lounging in the Trees

Posted Image

Photographer’s Description: Taken in June this year during a game drive at Nakuru National Park in Kenya. Rounding a bend on the track I came upon not one but seven of these magnificent young lions draped across the branches of an acacia tree. Some are dozing and some are looking disdainfully at me. I was transfixed by these superb, regal creatures. What a privilege for me to have witnessed this amazing moment. [Wai Chun Turnbull]

The Champ de Mars in Paris
Posted Image

The Champ de Mars (English: Field of Mars) is a large public greenspace in Paris, France, located in the seventh arrondissement, between the Eiffel Tower to the northwest and the École Militaire to the southeast. The park is named after the Campus Martius (“Mars Field”) in Rome, a tribute to the Roman God of War. The name also alludes to the fact that the lawns here were formerly used as drilling and marching grounds by the French military. [Source: Wikipedia]

The photograph is a composition of two panoramas of Champ de Mars from the Eiffel Tower. In the distance is Tour Montparnasse and the dome on the left is Les Invalides. This photo taken with a Canon 5D and 24-105mm f/4L IS.

Photographer’s Description: A diver explores a cenote, or freshwater sinkhole, on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. [Marc Filion]

The Yucatán Peninsula, in southeastern Mexico, separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico, with the northern coastline on the Yucatán Channel. The peninsula lies east of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a northwestern geographic partition separating the region of Central America from the rest of North America. The peninsula comprises the Mexican states of Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo; the northern part of the nation of Belize; and Guatemala’s northern El Petén Department. [Source: Wikipedia]

Manhattanhenge

Posted Image

Manhattanhenge – sometimes referred to as the Manhattan Solstice – is a semiannual occurrence in which the setting sun aligns with the east–west streets of the main street grid in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. The term is derived from Stonehenge, at which the sun aligns with the stones on the solstices. It was popularized in 2002 by Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History.
It applies to those streets that follow the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, which are laid out in a grid offset 29.0 degrees from true east–west. (The 29.0 degrees should be added to true east and west, making the western bearing approximately 299.0 degrees.) During Manhattanhenge, an observer on one of the gridded east-west streets will see the sun setting over New Jersey directly opposite from the street, along its centerline.
The dates of Manhattanhenge are usually around May 28 and July 12 or July 13 – spaced evenly around summer solstice. In 2011, Manhattanhenge occurred on May 31 at 8:17 p.m., and on July 12 (full sun) and 13 (half sun), both at 8:25 p.m.

A truly mesmerizing photograph of the Elephant Foot Glacier in Greenland. photographer was unable to find the original source, but a TinEye search led me to numerous blogs citing the original image being seen on The Guardian.
All I know about the glacier itself is that it can be found at around 81° N along the east coast of Greenland.

Flooded Ruins of Villa Epecuen
Posted Image
Posted Image
Back in the 1920s, a tourist village was established along the shore of Lago Epecuen, a salt lake some 600 kilometers southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The resort town, named Villa Epucuen, soon had a railroad station, and it thrived for several decades, peaking in the 1970s with a population of more than 5,000. Around the same time, a long-term weather event was delivering far more rain than usual to the surrounding hills for years, and Lago Epecuen began to swell.
In 1985, the salty waters broke through an earthen dam, and Villa Epecuen was doomed. A slow-growing flood consumed the town until it reached a depth of 10 meters (33 feet) in 1993. The wet weather later reversed, and the waters began to recede in 2009. AFP photographer Juan Mabromata recently visited the ruins of Villa Epecuen, met its sole inhabitant, and returned with these images. [Description by Alan Taylor]

Empire State Building Structural Worker 1930
Posted Image
The Empire State Building is a 102-story landmark in New York City, United States, at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. It is 1,250 ft (381 meters) tall. Its name is derived from the nickname for New York, the Empire State. It stood as the world’s tallest building for 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center’s North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, the Empire State Building once again became the tallest building in New York City.
The Empire State Building is currently the third tallest skyscraper in the United States (after the Willis Tower and Trump International Hotel and Tower, both in Chicago), and the 15th tallest in the world. It is also the fourth tallest freestanding structure in the Americas.

SPACE GRAFFITI
Posted Image
Forget Banksy, 63-year-old billionaire sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan has gone big. Visible from space… big. Scrawled on his private island Al Futaisi in Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates, HAMAD measures 1,000 meters (0.6 miles) in height and 3.2 KM (2 miles) in width.
The letters are dug so deep that they form an artificial waterway when filled with seawater. As a member of the ruling family of the oil-rich nation, Hamad is used to living it large. He built a pyramid to house 200 of his personal cars. He also built the world’s largest truck, large enough to build four bedrooms in the cabin. Oh yes, and he has a motor home shaped like the Earth, exactly one-millionth the size… of the Earth.
Needless to say, Hamad didn’t dig this latest extravagance by himself with a bucket and spade. He had some help from a team of his workmen who took weeks to complete the endeavor. There’s no word on how much it cost to dig.
You can see “HAMAD” yourself by typing the coordinates “24.3442, 54.3255″ into Google Earth or Google Maps.
Alongside his lavish displays of wealth he has become a well-known philanthropist in medicine and supplied a complete kidney stone operating theatre to a public hospital in Morocco where he continues to fund its staff.
